Privacy policy

Sunset Music Lessons is operated by Michael Cloutier in San Francisco, California. This policy explains how I handle information when you visit sunsetmusiclessons.com, ask about lessons, or arrange and take lessons with me.

The essentials: I use your information to respond to you and provide lessons. An inquiry does not subscribe you to marketing emails. I do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Lessons are not recorded. Optional website analytics run only after you accept them.

Information you provide

The inquiry form collects your name and email address, who lessons are for, the student's name and age, instrument, experience, preferred lesson format, and any message or referral details you choose to include. For a child, please provide only their first name and have a parent or guardian complete the form.

When we arrange lessons, I also keep relevant correspondence, scheduling and follow-up information, lesson preferences, and administrative notes. If you request a home visit, you may provide an address and access instructions directly when we arrange it. Please do not put payment credentials, identification documents, or unnecessary sensitive information in the inquiry form.

Information collected when you visit

Cloudflare hosts and protects the website and delivers inquiry emails. It processes technical information such as IP addresses, requested pages, request times, browser and device information, and security signals to deliver the site, prevent abuse, and report on traffic and errors. The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check for automated submissions, and rate limiting uses your IP address to reduce spam.

The site loads fonts from Google Fonts. Your browser contacts Google to retrieve those fonts, which exposes technical request information such as your IP address and browser headers. Hosting, security checks, and font delivery can operate even if you reject optional analytics.

How I use information

I use service providers for specific parts of the business:

These providers process information under their own terms and privacy policies, including for their own security and legal obligations. Their systems may process information in the United States and other countries. See the privacy information for Cloudflare, Google, Zoom, Venmo, PayPal, and your bank's Zelle service. Avoid including a child's full name or sensitive details in payment notes.

I may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law or a valid legal request, protect people or the service, or resolve a dispute. I do not provide inquiry details to other businesses for their own marketing.

Cookies, analytics, and browser choices

Google Analytics loads only after you choose “Accept cookies.” You can choose “Reject optional” and still use the website and inquiry form. Your choice is stored in your browser's local storage for up to 180 days. Clearing browser storage or using another browser or device may require you to choose again.

If you accept analytics, Google receives information such as pages visited, referring website, browser and device details, and an event when an inquiry is successfully submitted. Analytics cookies can distinguish visits over time. I do not send your form answers, contact details, or message text to Google Analytics. Google advertising signals and ad personalization are disabled in the site's analytics configuration.

Use “Cookie settings” in the footer to change your choice. Rejecting optional analytics stops future analytics collection on this site and removes its Google Analytics cookies where the browser permits. It does not erase information already collected by Google.

The site does not currently change its analytics setting automatically in response to a browser's Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal; use Cookie settings to reject analytics. I do not use the site for cross-context behavioral advertising. Providers such as Google and Cloudflare may also process information from other websites and services you use under their own privacy policies; rejecting analytics here does not control those separate activities.

Children and families

Adults should submit inquiries and arrange lessons for children. The website's inquiry service is intended for adult students and parents or guardians, rather than for children under 13 to submit their own information. I use information supplied by a parent or guardian about a child to discuss and provide lessons.

If you believe a child under 13 has submitted personal information directly without a parent's involvement, contact me so I can review and delete it as appropriate. Parents or guardians can also ask to review, correct, or delete information about their child. Please provide enough information to identify the inquiry without sending additional sensitive details.

How long information is kept

Unsuccessful inquiry emails: A daily cleanup moves eligible inquiry conversations to Gmail Trash after 90 days from when the inquiry is first recorded as Closed by the cleanup, or the last email in the conversation, whichever is later. It applies only to inquiries marked Closed in my inquiry records with no lesson booked. Active, booked, or paused student records, conversations needing review, and records held for a legitimate business or legal reason are excluded. Gmail normally permanently deletes items after 30 days in Trash.

This email cleanup does not automatically erase the separate inquiry record in Google Sheets, scheduling records, payment records, or a service provider's copies. I retain those only as needed to manage inquiries and lessons, maintain necessary business records, meet legal obligations, and resolve disputes. You can request earlier deletion using the contact details below; I will explain if specific information must be retained.

Technical logs, analytics, and provider backups have separate retention settings and deletion cycles. Deleting a record from my active systems may not immediately remove every backup or information a provider must retain for its own legal obligations.

Your privacy requests

Email hello@sunsetmusiclessons.com to ask what personal information I hold about you, request a correction or deletion, or ask me to stop nonessential follow-up. You can also use the inquiry form and identify your message as a privacy request.

I may need to verify that the request is yours or that you are authorized to act for a student before disclosing or changing records. I will respond in accordance with applicable law and explain any limits on fulfilling your request. This policy does not limit any privacy rights you have under California or other applicable law.

Security

The website uses HTTPS, access-restricted business tools, and spam-prevention measures. No online service or method of storage can guarantee complete security. Please contact me if you believe information connected with your lessons has been exposed or misused.

Changes to this policy

I will post updates on this page and change the effective date. For material changes, I will also provide a prominent website notice or contact affected people directly where appropriate, and obtain consent when required. Changes will not remove rights that apply to information already collected.
